Did you know that Wichita, KS is the biggest city in Kansas because Kansas City is partly in Missouri?
My region also has a nickname, the breadbasket. Due to its fine soil and ability to grow wheat, oats, and corn.

We have one of the best zoo’s in the country of United States of America.

The city Wichita is named after the Wichita Indians.

Maize got the name from the great corn field all through maize.

Pizza Hut first started in Wichita, KS.  The original Pizza Hut building is on the campus of Wichita State University.

White Castle restaurants started in Wichita.

We are known as the Air Capital because of all the aircraft plants.

President Eisenhower was from Abilene, KS.

White Rock School- Gorham Maine

Gorham is in southern Maine, about 15 miles away from Portland.  It is a small rural community with no major business.  It is the home of the University of Southern Maine.   There have been some important people in or from the community such as:

1. Hubbard Wilson introduced baseball to Japan.  In the 1990’s the Japanese government invited the Wilson Balcom to Japan to throw out the first ball in a professional game.

2. Levi Hall grew up in Gorham.  He went on to Harvard and invented the “Hall effect”.  This is one of the underlying principles of physics.

3. Percival Baxter was born in 1876 was governor of Maine twice.  He gave Baxter State Park to the state of Maine.  This park is 201,000 acres.  He established the Baxter School for the Deaf.

4.Bob Crowley, a teacher from Gorham won Survivor 2008.

5.Peter Mills, who ran for Governor, grew up in Gorham.

6.Andrew McMillan was an Arctic explorer.  He taught in Gorham.

Check out our great community.

Did you know  the biggest ball of twine is in Kansas?

The big ball of twine is located in Cawker City.  The giant ball of twine measures over 38  feet in circumference and weighs more than 16,750 pounds. It is still growing at this point of the day.

Did you know that White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas?

White Castle was founded in 1921 inWichita, Kansas. Walter A. Anderson partnered with cook Edgar Waldo "Billy" Ingram to make White Castle into a chain of restaurants and market White Castle. Although White Castle originated in Wichita, KS, the city no longer has one. White Castle is one of the few restaurants that doesn't have a chain in their original city, but residents are currently trying to bring the chain back to Wichita.

Did you know that Pizza Hut began in Wichita, Kansas?

Pizza Hut was opened on June 15, 1958 in Wichita, Kansas. A year later the first franchise opened in Topeka, and the move to become a national chain was on. Two brothers named Frank and Dan Carney started this “Pizza Craze.” Pizza Hut is the world’s largest franchise ever created. Pizza hut are the world's largest user of cheese, one of their secret recipes is the Insider pizza and that alone uses a pound of cheese on each pizza. Over the course of a summer it is estimated that Pizza hut uses a 100 million pounds of cheese. Pizza Hut uses more than 300 million pounds of cheese annually.

  AIRPLANES, MUSEUMS AND HAMBURGERS

Clyde Vernon Cessna was born in Rogo, Kansas as a farmer. He was the Founder of the Cessna aircraft company. He was one of the first people, to build a biplane to fly over the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. Another one of Kansas’s wonders is the Museum of World Treasures. The museum is famous for having two live mummies! The museum also has a big T- Rex, when you enter. Another cool feature is when you enter the 2nd floor you will find that you are in a trench, during WW1. If you ever are feeling like grabbing a bite to eat then I would recommend going to a burger joint called Spangles. It will make your taste buds smile

What is the Keeper of the Plains?

The Keeper of the Plains stands at the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers with hands raised in supplication to the Great Spirit. The sculpture was made by a Wichitan and Native American artist Blackbear Bosin(1921 -1980). It stands about 44 feet tall, and weighs a whopping 5 tons.  Since the sculpture's installation in 1974 to commemorate the United States Bicentennial, it has become a symbol for the city of Wichita and a tribute to the Native American tribes who continue to gather at this sacred site.  It now stands on a 30 foot tall pedestal, and has a " Ring of Fire" surrounding it. The ring of fire comes to life every night at 9 pm for 15 minutes. They have also installed a bridge that allows pedestrians to walk across and into the Plaza. In the Plaza you can see how the Plains Indians live, what they wore, slept in, and even ate.

NEW IMAX COMING TO WICHITA

IMAX is a new edition to Wichita. It is originally the Warren Theater, but we have decided to add on an IMAX. This picture was taken on November 3, 2010, and this IMAX is supposed to be done by the end of late December. They are making tons of progress on it, and are still continuing to. I think they have done a great job so far. They will definitely have it done by the end of December I think. Wichita is so excited to have this, and I think that this will be a great place to go to hangout. The tickets at matinee ( day time) are 12.00 and at night time showings they will be 14.00 if you are 12 and over.

Mirage Elementary School ~ Phoenix Arizona

Here are some interesting facts about our sunny city.

Phoenix was once a sleepy desert town populated only by cacti and cowboys.

The advent of air-conditioning and airplanes has turned the Valley of the Sun into one of America's hottest vacation destinations - especially when most of the country is cold. Consider these facts:

• With 1.4 million residents, Phoenix is the fifth-largest city in the USA.

• More than 13 million people visit annually, arriving on more than 20 airlines.

• There are 55,000 hotel rooms, 200 golf courses, and almost no rain (7.66 inches of annual rainfall, an average annual high temperature of 85, and 325 sun-filled days per year).

• Though Phoenix sits in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, its elevation is 1,117 feet (much higher than any point in Florida) and six lakes are within a 75-mile drive.

• The nine major-league baseball teams that train in Phoenix for six weeks (starting in mid-February) are the Angels, Athletics, Brewers, Cubs, Giants, Mariners, Padres, Rangers, and Royals.

• City museums feature Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, Native American art, area history, the world's largest collection of desert plants, and the largest collection of fire-fighting equipment on the planet - in something called the Hall of Flame.

• Phoenix Sky Harbor International, the world's sixth-busiest airport, also has one of the largest airport art collection (200 permanent pieces).

. Arizona is home to many Indian cultures such as the Apache and the Navajo. Arizona has the largest Native American population of any state. More than 14 tribes are represented on 20 reservations, including part of the Navajo Nation, which is located in the Four Corners region of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah.

Arizona is full of beautiful natural attractions like the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest
